About Shaffer Block

Shaffer Block was started in 1945 by William S. Shaffer who took the business from the days of hand tamp machines that made about 400 to 500 block a day to the modern machine era of the late 1950's and 1960's when newer machines produced 4500 to 5000 block per day.

Donald G. Shaffer purchased Shaffer Block Works from his father around 1974, combined it with Shaffer Construction Company and re-named the company Shaffer Block & Concrete Products. The company provided concrete blocks, redi mix concrete and was a producer of precast concrete buildings and products. In addition there was a large concrete and masonry construction division to the business.

Around 1978 a new plant building was constructed and a new block machine was installed in 1981. Continuous upgrades were made in the block plant through the 1980's and early 90's.

The early 1990’s saw a huge demand for concrete masonry products of all types and the company expanded its capacity by installing a new, more automated production line once again. Around that time the construction division, followed by the redi mix division were shut down to concentrate on the block manufacturing part of the business.

Shaffer Block & Concrete Products was incorporated on January 1, 1993 when Don’s sons, Joel and Mark were taken into the business as corporate shareholders/owners.

The business thrived through the years until the recession of 2008. Due to the Recession and changing market conditions the sales of concrete masonry units steadily declined through the years from 2008 to the current time.

In July 2017, Joel sold his share of the business and Mark became the sole stockholder of the company. Due to continuing market decline the block plant was closed permanently on September 30, 2020, about 75 years to the day from the opening by my Grandfather, William S. Shaffer.

Shaffer Block continues to supply quality concrete products as a dealer for various other producers. In addition we now operate a small fleet of regional, over the road flatbed trucks serving various customers hauling commodities throughout the Mid-Atlantic and New England areas.
